Russell Terrace - Newtown

Russell Terrace, Newtown in 1908, when brickworks chimneys, tram lines and freshly built villas defined the skyline. Same street, same bonesโ€ฆ just swap the smokestacks for coffee spots โ˜•๏ธ

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Food & Drink โ€“ Mother Goose Bar & Kitchen

Wairarapa just quietly keeps delivering, and Mother Goose is one of those places that feels like a proper find. Set in a beautifully restored heritage space, it blends relaxed country charm with a genuinely elevated food and drink offering thatโ€™s well worth the drive over the hill.

We tried their Gin High Tea (part of the Greytown Cocktail Festival) and it absolutely delivers - sweet and savoury tiers, delicate elderflower infusions, and standout pours from Greytown Distilling Company that tie it all together. Itโ€™s generous, beautifully presented, and one of those experiences that feels a little bit special without being over the top.

At $40 per person (minimum two), the high tea is great value for something that feels like a proper occasion, and the kind of thing that turns a casual Wairarapa trip into a full-day outing.

But itโ€™s not just about the high tea - the broader menu is stacked with crowd-pleasers (think pork belly bites, sticky ribs, fresh fish and chips, and proper classic desserts), so you can easily turn it into a long lunch or settle in for the afternoon.
