๐ WellyBuzz: Giant Squid, Sunset Dances & Boxing Day Buzz
Lavender fields, live racing, waterfront dancing, giant squid, afternoon jazz and a very full Wellington weekend.

Merry Christmas Wellington! ๐
Before we dive into the weekend, we just want to pause and say a heartfelt thank you to all our wonderful subscribers (now over 15,000 of you!). We started WellyBuzz just over a year ago with a simple idea: to share the very best of whatโs happening around the Wellington region. Thanks to your support, itโs grown into something weโre incredibly proud of. Weโve loved bringing you the events, places and moments that make Wellington such a great place to live, and we canโt wait to keep doing it in the year ahead. A very Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.
- Kirstie & Steve ๐
Whether youโre easing into Christmas morning with a coffee in hand, planning a Boxing Day escape, or quietly mapping out your post-lunch adventures, Wellington is lining up a very good long weekend. From Boxing Day racing in ลtaki and sunset dancing on the waterfront to giant squid sightings in Greytown, lavender fields at peak bloom and afternoon jazz in the city, thereโs plenty to look forward to over the next few days.
And if youโre keen for a festive wander after dark, Whitby has absolutely gone all in on Christmas lights this year - well worth a short evening drive. Weโve shared it in a quick Reel below if youโre keen to see what all the fuss is about. ๐โจ

As always at this time of year, event details can change, so we recommend double-checking listings or confirming with organisers before heading out. However you spend it, we hope the next few days bring good company, small adventures, and a little bit of Wellington magic. ๐

๐ Extra Sprinkles โ Supporting Wellington kids and families through lifeโs toughest moments
๐ฐ๏ธ Wellyโs Time Machine โ Thorndon Quay, circa 1925.
This snap captures a very different Wellington - electric trams gliding past timber buildings, overhead wires criss-crossing the sky, and early motor trucks sharing the road. On the right sits the Railway Hotel, a popular watering hole for rail workers and locals, which would later be destroyed by a major fire in May 1929.

๐ Local Legends โ Shipwreck Trading (Boatshed 8, Frank Kitts Park)
A one-of-a-kind waterfront treasure trove dealing in genuine ship salvage, nautical antiques and maritime curios - from portholes and sextants to anchors, bells and shipwreck artefacts. Run by Robert, who literally lives on the harbour, the store recently relocated to Frank Kitts Park and even includes an in-store VR dive experience. Every item has a story, and browsing feels like stepping aboard a floating museum.
๐ฝ๏ธ Food & Drink โ Dilly Dally (126 Vivian St, Te Aro)
Dilly Dally is a compact new spot on Vivian Street quietly winning over the CBD with fresh, thoughtful food and a calm, unhurried vibe. The menu centres on beautifully built salad bowls with house-pickled and homemade elements, alongside creative smoothies featuring ingredients like turmeric, black sesame and blue spirulina. Itโs an ideal stop if your lunch cravings lean healthy, seasonal and considered rather than rushed or heavy.
