๐ฐ๏ธ When Olivier & Leigh Took Centre Stage in Wellington
In 1948, Paraparaumu Airport saw a touch of theatrical royalty. Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh - then the most famous acting couple in the world - landed north of Wellington as part of their whirlwind New Zealand tour with Londonโs prestigious Old Vic theatre company. Their arrival caused quite the stir, with fans flocking to catch a glimpse.
It was the first time a theatre troupe had toured Aotearoa entirely by air. Five planes carried not just the actors, but every last costume and prop for their acclaimed performance of The School for Scandal.
