🕰️ Welly’s Time Machine – When Flying Boats Ruled Evans Bay

In January 1938, crowds gathered around Evans Bay to watch the Short S.23 Empire flying boat “Centaurus” from Imperial Airways land on the harbour during a survey flight - a spectacular sight that marked the beginning of Wellington’s flying-boat era.
Through the late 1930s and 1940s, Evans Bay became the city’s main flying-boat alighting area, later welcoming TEAL’s “Aotearoa” during the 1940 Centennial Exhibition.
Flying-boat operations continued in the bay until 1956, when land-based aircraft at Rongotai finally took over.

🌟 Local Legends – Niche Textile Studio (Lyall Bay, Wellington)

Niche Textile Studio is a serene, light-filled weaving space run by fibre artist Christine Brimer, who works with natural fibres such as undyed New Zealand wool, linen, and recycled materials. Her home studio overlooking Lyall Bay hosts small, hands-on workshops that introduce people to loom weaving and sustainable textile practice. It’s a peaceful creative spot championing slow craft, natural materials, and community connection.
