Spring has properly arrived and this weekend is stacked. Upper Hutt throws its Spring Festival and an Irish Cultural Festival on the same day, 150+ exhibitors fill Te Rauparaha Arena for the Wellington Brick Show, the Royal New Zealand Ballet puts on a free children's ballet at Te Papa with no booking needed, and Carterton drowns itself in daffodils on Sunday. π°οΈ Welly's Time Machine
In 1918 Wellington City Council entered the milk business - possibly the first local authority in the world to do so, according to Wellington City Libraries. By the 1920s it controlled the cityβs milk supply, with a dairy factory at Rahui near Εtaki and horse-drawn carts. The Wellington City Milk-supply Act 1919 has never been formally repealed, meaning licensed vendors technically still cannot sell skimmed milk. Lawyer Tyrone Barugh applied for a licence to open a milk-cocktail bar, but the council declined. He filed a High Court appeal, then withdrew it after the council agreed to pursue repeal. In 2026 the Act was one of 152 identified for possible repeal, but it remains in force.

The old Hudson site reopened as The Junction back in March, and it's turned into a proper all-day pub - coffee from 8am on weekdays, then straight through to dinner.
Honest pub cooking at honest prices: beer-battered fish and chips $27, cheeseburger $26, chicken parmy $29, toasties $15, and a 28-day dry-aged scotch fillet at $36. Ask about the beveragino of the week, their rotating cocktail.
They're open from 8am on weekdays and 9am Saturdays, through to 10pm Thursday to Saturday, and closed Sundays. It's a supervised licence, so R18 unless the kids are with a parent or caregiver. There's outdoor seating, and dogs are welcome.

Te Wiki o te Reo MΔori runs 14-20 September and it opens with a big one. There will be speeches at Parliament from 10am, the parade leaves at 11am and reaches Odlins Plaza at noon, with festivities continuing until after 1.30pm. Later in the week ARO host free waiata songwriting workshops at Te Matapihi on Wednesday 16th and Friday 18th, and TNT! take a 27-piece big band to the Opera House on Saturday 19th.

Futuna Chapel Trust
When the Society of Mary sold the Futuna complex in 2000 and John Scott's 1961 chapel faced demolition, a group of private citizens formed a trust and bought the building themselves. Every trustee is a volunteer, and rates, insurance, power and maintenance all come out of koha and sponsorship.
Their big annual fundraiser is the Futuna Lecture Series: documentary maker Catherine Hunter and architect Nick Sissons on their years with Pritzker laureate Glenn Murcutt. The lecture is Tue 22 Sept at Old St Paul's from 6.30pm ($31.20 general, $10.60 student, incl. fees) and the screening is Wed 23 Sept at the Embassy ($20.90).
The chapel is at 67 Futuna Close, Karori, open free the first Sunday of the month. Charity CC31180.
