On 10 January 1859, Mary Jane Bennett was officially appointed keeper of New Zealandโs first permanent lighthouse at Pencarrow Head - becoming the first and only woman to ever hold that position. The cast-iron lighthouse had been first lit on New Yearโs Day, marking a new era of coastal safety for Wellington Harbour. Her salary was ยฃ125 a year, (including firewood).
